Before the Roman Empire, there was the Roman Republic… where ancient Rome was ruled by the powerful Senate and moneyers were responsible for creating the coins used by the citizens of this rising power.

This silver coin, a Denarius, was minted by moneyer Lucius Scribonius Libo in 62 BC in Rome. On the Front (obverse) It pictures the personification of Bonus Eventus. Bonus Eventus was the personification of Success of Good Fortune - Bonus Eventus translates to: Good Outcome. On the back (reverse) is the Puteal Scribonianum, decorated with garland and two lyres with a hammer at the base. (See below for more on this rare issue.)

And... the history behind this issues is equally fascinating.

The Puteal Scribonianum was a famed structure housed in the Forum Romanum. A Puteal is a structure built over a well to prevent people from falling in. Our moneyer, Lucius Scribonius Libo had renovated this structure, and this coin design was minted depicting the renovated structure. So, this denarius speaks to us directly from the heart of ancient Rome.
